I'm trying to shrink my hard drive so I can dual boot xp and vista (I have vista installed already). Every time I click "shrink" I get a message that says:

The volume you have selected to shrink does not have a recognizable file system. Shrinking this volume will erase any data that you may have stored on it. Are you sure you want to shrink this volume?

Is there anyway I can fix without erasing all my data?

    I'm using a Gateway laptop.

What file system does that volume use? Try using EASEUS Partition Manager too.

Backing up is a must whenever working with partitions.
