    Hi,
I am a newbie in OS so go slowly please :)

Did two factory restore followed by disck cleanup and defrag (perfectdisk) and have been able to go:

    FROM
    C - 115 Gb

    TO
    C - 40 Gb
    Free space - 35 Gb
    D - 40 Gb

I tried to extend the D but it is gray out. What should I do to allocate free space to D partition ??

Went to Vista website and saw that "When you delete a hard disk partition or volume (the terms partition and volume are often used interchangeably), you create empty space that you can use to create new partitions".

Then, can I just delete D ? What will happen if I delete the partition, will it become unallocated or free space ??

    Thanks

If you have nothing in D, if you delete it, you will have 75GB of free space, and you can create a new partition that is 75GB.

I just tried deleting a partition, apparently it turns to free space. I'm not sure how to get it to say unallocated. Hope that helps.

With Vista you cannot extent a partition only shrink it. (Thanks Bill.) There are third party programs you can use to reclaim the free space for your Vista partition. Most Linux 'Live Discs' have parted as one of their standard disc tools, and could use this to extent you Vista partition without putting it on your hard drive.
What I would recommend is that you download (or get a geek friend to) and burn one of the many Linux rescue discs and use this and keep it handy. Distro Watch Com has a full range but RIP or Magic Partition would be the best.
I would advise all Windows users to have one of these discs on hand.
If you felt adventurous, you could load one of the many very good Linux distros and load them on your free space. I suggest (in order of preference) Ubuntu, Suse, Mandriva, Fedora, or Fedora. Distro watch will give you the download pages for any of these.
Remember Linux is free and though the above may sound complicated it's not and I suggest you approach it as a learning opportunity.

    Thanks for your comments...

@Trickz - D is empty indeed, so I will try to delete D:/ tonight as it is the easiest method to combine free space together. Thanks for your help.

@UncleRichard - I have donwloaded the GParted LiveCD 3.7.7 yesterday but I wanted to have a confirmation about the first option above (deleted partition to combine free space). Thanks for your suggestion, I know that I should try it at least once (to not die stupid) but I guess the reason I never did it wast time and motivation.

    I'll report back soon
    Thank you

Here's now to extend a volume in Vista.

I've just tried to delete a volume and extend it and it works perfectly fine.

The case is, you must have free space beside the partition that wants to extend. Say you have a block of C, free space, D, and E, and you want to extend E, that is not possible. You can only extend C in this case.

    Thanks for your answers...

I finally manage to get my partition right !!

    FROM
    C - 115 Gb

    TO
    C - 28 Gb
    D - 87 Gb

I did one Factory restore. Shrink C and create single volume D, then Factory Restore again but only for C. Then shrink C again to get free space, then just delete D and indeed, unallocated space are joined together and create single volume again D. Factory restore again, shrink C again to get free space and delete D, combine free space and create singel volume D.

A bit long but I knew it would be possible without external software.

    Thank you

Say you have C: then free space then D:
    [--C:--][--Free--][--D:--]
You then delete D: (make sure it's empty!!)
    [--C:--][--Free----------]
Then create a new D: in the free space.
    [--C:--][--D:------------]
    All done.
