Actually, the Sansa does not use its own manager. i did however find the source of the problem.

In all those services that start at boot-up there were two that I found disabled: "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity" and "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service." I set those to Automatic mode and viola, the problem has gone away and my Sansa is now recognized by all relevant programs.

Why they got disabled in the first place is beyond me.

I am using Vista Home Premium on a Dell XPS 420. Windows Media Player 11 does not detect my mp3 player for some reason. I have used Device Manager to both disable the player and then enable it and also uninstalled the player, disconnected it and then reconnected it. Drivers load and Device Manger reports all is well. This is a Sansa Fuze and I have all the latest firmware updates installed. There is nothing on the Microsoft website about this other than disabling/enabling the device.

You can't remove WMP 11 as it is part of the operating system and you can't roll it back to WMP 10. So, anybody have any ideas of what I might be able to do to fix this problem?

Thanks

To al,

When you get a machine pre-loaded with vista, two partitions(drives) are already created. The c:\ partititon ( boot drive, primary, etc ) and the d:\ partition ( primary ) containing the recovery image files. Oddly enough, when using the vista SHRINK option, you can name the new partititon whatever you wish ( I chose e:\ ) and following the formatting of the partititon, this new partition as well as the other two, is also made primary. When trying to boot from the windows XP pro cd at startup, in theory it is supposed to see the new partition ( e:\) and allow me to load this OS on it. This is what is not happening and the source of my problem. The Windows load gets as far as running setup and then crashes. The choice to install the OS on the new partition is not given thus causing the problem and the reason for my seeking help. Vista does allow me to make the new drive " active " with a warning that if no OS exists on it the computer will be useless. If I make the new partition " active " then try to load the Windows XP OS, will this work ?? if not will I be able to restore Vista without too much damage?

You have to make sure E is a "primary partition"

By the way, once you install XP, its bootloader will override Vista's, and you won't be able to boot into Vista.

In XP, download a program called BCDEditor to fix this problem.

I have Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. I use the default Aero theme, where the only change I made was the PaddedBorderWidth equals to zero.

And suddenly, after a reboot, the PaddedBorderWidth property restored its value back to 4.

I change it again to 0, everything seems to be ok but after every reboot, the value restores back to 4.

I tried something else: I installed VistaGlazz and installed a different theme. But after the reboot, the system restores again the default aero theme (having PaddedBorderWidth equals to 4 again).

I don't know what else to do! Any help?

perhaps one of your ram modules are broken?
when you install the 4th module to obtain 4gb, try using that to obtain 3.2 gb and see what happens.

It does protect your screen from burn-in. One thing I see at schools is that many of their monitors have burn in from the login screen because monitors are left on over-night or all the time when not in use.

The best option would be to have your monitor stand-by when not in use

I'm using 2 - 2 gb ram modules, 1 for each slot to give a total of 4 gb. If I only mount one of the modules I can get the laptop to boot up correctly. However, when i mount the second ram module (2bg) for a total of 4bg, the laptop will not boot...period. I get a black screen (Windows Safe Mode and or options). When I try to launch in Safe mode, I see a brief flash of the Windows Loading screen, a very fast flash of a blue screen, then back to the windows safe mode screen. No matter what option I select I cannot get Windows to boot at all. If I select to go into the BIOS, I can see that 4096 gb of Ram are loaded in the memory, but Windows will not boot. If I remove one of the 2gb modules, Vista boots normally. I have an identical laptop with Windows XP OS, and it took the 4 gb and loaded fine only showing 3.3bg, but it still loaded.

No, 32-bit can handle 4GB fine but will only utilize about 3.3GB of it. To completely use 4GB, you would need 64-bit

I am running Vista 32 bit and the screen saver will not go on, except when I put the computer to sleep manually. The sleep mode will not work in the power saving setting either. The display will not turn off in the power saving settings and will not go to sleep. I am mostly curious about the screen saver not functioning because I can manually put to sleep. Any suggestions?

I have seen several posts regarding memory issues with vista 32bit. But I had'nt seen one like the problem I am experiencing. My Old configuration was Windows XP w/1 meg ram, but I upgraded to vista 32bit. No problems with stability issues until I decided to upgrade memory from 2 x 512 mg to 2 x 2gb. If I load all 4 gb of ram my laptop will not boot, I launches into the selection screen that tells you you need to load windows in safe mode, however, it will never load in safe or any of the other options that are available. If I remove one of the memory sticks and only load up 2 gigs of ram, Viata will launch, and show that there are 2 gb of ram available. When I have gone into the BIOS while all 4 gb were loaded, the mem size shows the correct amount of memory, but Vista will not launch. Do i need to upgrade to Vista 64bit?
