Remove icons from the System Tray
As you install more and more programs, your system tray will begin to expand itself like there’s no tomorrow. Luckily there’s a feature in Windows Vista that allows you to manually choose which icons to hide.
So in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to turn
into

First, aim your mouse on any empty black space in the system tray. The best spot would be the empty space on the right side of the time, but any space will do. Then choose Properties.

You’ll be led to a window called Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. Before you click on customize, look below and it gives you the option of removing the “System Icons.”
![]()
Click on Customize and you’ll be able to see a list of all the programs that have installed itself into the System Tray as well as the option of hiding them or showing them. If you choose hide, it won’t actually erase the icon from the System Tray. You will still have access to the hidden icons if you click on the arrow that expands the system tray. You can also choose hide when inactive, which is pretty self-explanatory.

This is a really useful feature for keeping a clean looking setup on your computer.

How do you remove the Yahoo search bar from the tray? it doesn’t appear to be listed, and I really hate having it there taking up space in my tray al the time.

Very nice. I could not see how to do this when the application is not very well behaved i.e. when it won’t let you naturally remove it by right-clicking. Until you pointed out this method!

No there isn’t. I guess it’s hide. You wouldn’t want to delete something from there because you never know when you’re going to need it

Yes, but what you can do, is go to msconfig and uncheck the programs you don’t want in the tray, and then hide the notice of block programs through the method described above. That removes and hides the notice that they’ve been removed.
