iPod fix for Windows Vista

As of yesterday, Microsoft released an update that deals with the iPod problem Windows Vista users have been experiencing. Symptoms involve the corruption of iPod data after using the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature to remove the iPod. The big question is: Where is that fix? It’s nowhere to be seen in your Windows Updates, most likely because updates come every second Tuesday of the month. No worries.

  • The fix that was released yesterday can be found here.

As advised on the Apple website, the correct way to disconnect an iPod is to choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu in iTunes - iTunes 7.1.1 that is. And, if you are planning to upgrade to Windows Vista prior to the next release of iTunes, Apple has a few tips here.

It’s worth adding that if your iPod refuses to go into Disk Mode and you hear a noticeable clicking sound the problem might just be corrosion on the HDD cable and will need cleaned periodically.
