Thanks for the tips. My computer runs great! There is just one thing I miss that dissappeared after I disabled all the services on the list. I have a Dell laptop that if I use the function key I can lower and raise the volume and a volume bar would show up on my screen when I used it. It no longer shows up! Same thing for any of the graphical illustrations for any of the function options such as brightness, battery, wi-fi, etc. Any idea which service blasted it?

Much appreciated.

Thanks,

But to all the people who speak highly about ubuntu, that program is the most bloated unix out there, so stop talking and start being a real unix user and run something like fedora

Here are two lists. One of softs I have tried with Win7, with NO success or performance increase, total bogus junk, or incompatible.

Junk:
*Game Gain-(when attempting to set to Fastest setting, it would restart windows 7)
*AMD Fusion This was my biggest letdown. While a great concept with some awesome features, you need a complete AMD hardware setup in order for it to really work. I managed to get it to start, only to crash my system as soon as Borderlands was running. Make sure to research EVERY piece of software that comes with this before you use it. It is a little too powerful, and not customizable enough.
*Any internet accelerator- This one took me a long time to learn, but the best way to get the most out of your connection, is to do it yourself. There is no way any program will make Vista or 7 work faster over the net than Speedguide.net's very own information that teaches you how to set it yourself. They have every detail on every option for your internet tweaking, and backup .reg files for fixing it if you make a boo-boo. And by doing it yourself, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you did it on your own.

Stuff that has been a boon to my gaming experience:

*Game Booster- (this is the best. What it does is allows you to configure a list of Services you wish to shut off when you are gaming (check Black Vipers services page for more info) as well as select programs you dont need running in the background. One click and you can easily free up megs of memory and resources. Free!!
*RAMDisk- If you have more than 2 gigs of memory, this works pretty good. It allows you to create a RAM "disk" that you can set your .temp folder to as well as scratch file and other files/folders that you only access during your current session (since it deletes it all on restart). The reason is that accessing your RAM is about 1000x faster than accessing your hard disk, especially if you are still using IDE (like me). It loads web pages instantly, makes my programs load hella fast, and if set right, automatically boots up the .img file on start up so you set it once and forget it.
*CleanMem- To go with RAMDisk, another free app called CleanMem works great. Once you started Game Booster (or other services killer) use CleanMem to rid your RAM of excess services remnants, and be on your way.
Leatrix Latency Fix- This is just an applicable registry tweak that you run that sets certain parameters to decrease your latency. It basically disables Nagles Algorithm, which in turn allows windows to send small packets over internet instantly rather than waiting to bundle them together and send a big file. Some games this works well, others not so. But it don't hurt to test it if you your latency is huge.
MyDefrag- Probably the best FREE defragger. Fast, and it sets up your files optimally based on usage, so that your HDD head doesn't have to move around so much, which decreases seek times as well as read/write times, especially if you have at least 2 hard drives, put one on each IDE bus (i.e. don't put them both on the same cable, that's parallel. While it is easier, it is NOT the best way to get optimal performace from IDE drives. Also, if you utilize this setup, if you put your OS and Programs on one drive, partition it to about double (or more depending on your future needs for software room or if you like me test lots of stuff) for OS & programs, and use the other for storage, then set up your second drive with Page file and partition it also and put second partition for backups. This seems to work really well for me. I also put my RAMDisk on my main OS/Program Drive so as to not interfere at all with my page file (even though it uses RAM as a disk, you still have to create an .img file and store it somewhere.)

Still testing:
*O&O Clever Cache 7- This little ditty supposedly manages memory and cpu and HDD better and more efficiently than windows. In Vista, it was great (v.6) but with 7, I am not sure if it is better or not, yet. Seems pretty redundant. There are some cool settings though for cpu optimization and the ability to have it change profiles via the .exe of your select game. Provides lots of information too. But just not sure if the extra management is worth the extra resources it consumes. Windows 7 does a great job itself.
*TuneUp Utilities 10- Has a Turbo feature that does similiar work to Game Booster, but rather than allowing you to set individual services, you just tell it what "groups" of windows built in features you don't want to use (i.e. Printer, Tablet, etc) The Live Optimization feature also seems to need some work since it can actually lag your game when it is supposed to be increasing your CPU priority for the game. Otherwise, this is probably my favorite AIO set.

I'll post up some more later. It's late on new years and I'm ready to play some Dragon Age.

Props man. I myself am constantly trying new OS variants of Vista and 7 (XP is done, soon there will be no more support, and as great as it is, it is no longer a future proof viable option, so moving on to windows 8 in 2011) from sources of a special color just to see what windows can really do if put in the "right" hands. It's the little places like this page that make all my work so gratifying. Thank you for your contribution to my tests. I want to say that as a gamer, I need every last drop of performance I can possible muster out of my machine. And to boot I am still operating an AMD socket 939 Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego core oc'd at 3ghz with only 2 gigs of DDR PC3200 ram and a single nVidia 9800GTX 512mb vid card on a very old ECS KN1 LITE mobo. And with all this ancient tech, I am still able to run at highest settings with astonishing results on almost any new game out now all because of the little tweaks and awesome free softwares that I have found on special places like here.
If yer interested in a rundown of some of my favorite programs and a list of tweaks I use that have made the biggest impact, just reply to this.
